Joyce Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Joyce Peterson had a love for learning and passion for caring for others. She dedicated herself to the field of nursing, starting as a nursing assistant and then earning both her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Associate Degree Nurse Credentials from Moraine Park Technical College. She was born in 1938 and grew up on the family farmstead in Neshkoro, WI. In 1959, she married her husband Fred. They would eventually start a family and move to Waupun where Joyce began employment with Waupun Memorial Hospital as a nursing assistant. Joyce had a strong work ethic and enrolled at Moraine Park while raising four small children. After graduating, she became an LPN and worked in long-term care. At age 50, she returned to Moraine Park and completed the Associate Degree Nursing Program and went on to work as a registered nurse with special needs patients, the incarcerated, and the elderly. Each person, regardless of their story, was someone to be cared for. In total, Joyce’s nursing career spanned more than forty years. Her fellow nurses often commented on Joyce’s commitment to teach others and her dedication to the patients she served. Joyce was a lifelong learner and made education a priority for her children and grandchildren, a commitment that changed Joyce’s life and, in turn, changed the lives of untold generations to come. She passed away in 2018 but she leaves us with a rich legacy. This memorial scholarship is dedicated to Joyce’s memory and seeks to support educational attainment of nursing students who are committed to lifelong learning in service to others.
